Tuesdays With Kris: The Kings Speech

Posted by Unknown on Monday, January 31, 2011

This site is all about motivation... hence the title. Sometimes I wonder what is that driving force that  pulls us out of the mud? I just saw The Kings Speech on Sunday and got to thinking. I started wondering what was stopping me from achieving my goals...whatever they are! I'm not a King who can't deliver a speech and has to prepare his country for a potential war with Hitler (that's part of the film's plot). I'm not responsible for the world, a country, my state, or even the apartment building I rent in! So what is stopping me? Aha, the burning question. I think sometimes we can be that sticky mud that is holding us back. We look to blame other things... the weather, our job, other people... all things we can't control in the first place! But we can control ourselves I think... how? For starters a list always helps and I was inspired by Martha's Realtor Game too. Try and come outside your bubble and see how others see you. You may teach yourself how to move forward instead of holding back. Here are some ways that I like to remove myself to see the bigger picture.

1. Watch a movie. Clearly The Kings Speech hit a chord. Biopics are great. Don't they always seem to be about someone who had a really bad hand dealed to them and then they became a legend?
2. Make a list. Even the longest do-list gets crossed off quickly and the dust has been lifted.
3. Take a bath. Suds and warmth always calm the nerves.
4. Play with a pet. They don't ever judge... unless you scratch that one area that is their Achilles heel!
5. Take pictures. See what capturing beauty means to you. Use it as inspiration for wardrobe, decorating, and more!
6. Draw. Whether you have an ounce of Da Vinci in you or not, create a work of art and hang it up or print it onto greeting cards. Share your creativity to inspire it in others. Be proud of your work!
7. Get your hair done or buy new make-up. These are instant confidence boosters!
8. Talk to an old friend. With facebook, you are just a click away from an old chum. See what they are up to!
9. Read An Education... it's...educational.
10. Remember when you were 5 and ran around the house talking to your imaginary friend and you didn't care if people thought you were crazy? Heck, we didn't even know what crazy was at that age! Point is, do something childish in public and don't care what people think of you! Just look at them like they are crazy.... it's kind of amusing!

And if none of these work... curse like a King! (mind this clip if you don't like cursing... I must say this is pretty tastefully done! Great film.)

I hope this post found you all in good spirits. Keep on truckin'.

Motivation Monday - Playing the Game

Posted by Unknown

Last week I introduced The Realtor Game. Did anyone do the assignment for week one? There is really no rush, this is a game that can be played anytime, but if you want to get organized and start getting things done what better time than now to jump in and play along!

If you did do part one you have had a week to look over your list and think about things a bit.

This week we are going to spend some time sorting the list, outlining, prioritizing and setting some goals. Think about each item on your list and place them into categories - an example would be listing things by room or area then listing the things you can do yourself, things you need help with, and things you have to hire someone to do. How you organize your list is up to you. Once you have your list organized and prioritized let's get started. Let's try to begin with concentration on the most noticeable things other see when they enter our homes. Pick a project and get er done!

My list is more of a book than a list! I'm playing this game at two different homes at once. I started this week by getting all the stuff I have already packed along with things I've purchased for the new house all stacked into one area. I have more boxes for packing stacked in another area. I have the living room and dining room all decluttered and packed - these are the areas I'm using to store everything that's packed and ready to go.

This week I will be working on finishing up a couple of the decluttering projects I've started on and to start sorting through the surface stuff - you know, the piles on our desks, in the entryway, etc. Just because I'm in the middle of packing and renovations doesn't mean we have to live in a disaster area while it's happening.

It's still going to be months before our actual move but getting as much of the decluttering, sorting, and packing done now as I can will prevent a bunch of junk being brought along with us.

**************************

Play along on the Realtor Game here at TMS, link up your posts on the sidebar at Show and Tell - and don't forget to link up to The Organizing Junkie's 52 Weeks of Organizing too!

Wishing you a Motivated Monday!

This Day
This day's going to be a good one.
I'm alive and well.

This day's going to be a fine one.
I'll sit and rest a spell.

This day's going to be a great one.
I don't have to go to work.

This day's going to be a swell one.
I got some coffee to perk.

This day's going to be a fun one.
My bills are paid on time.

This day's going to be the best one.
I got some words to rhyme.

This day's going to be a happy one.
I got my attitude in check.

This day's going to be a praising one.
I'll give that old devil a run for his money.

This day's going to be a dancing one.
My feet feel fancy free.

This day's going to be a one of a kind.
Cause it's my day and there's only one me.

R and R TIP #34: Revivals come from survivals. Relaxation can reduce stress and help you enjoy a better quality of life.

Relaxation isn't just about peace of mind or enjoying a hobby. Relaxation is a process that decreases the wear and tear on your mind and body from the challenges and hassles of daily life

RELAXATION has many health benefits

Slowing your heart rate

Lowering blood pressure

Slowing your breathing rate

Increasing blood flow to major muscles

Reducing muscle tension and chronic pain

Improving concentration

Reducing anger and frustration

Boosting confidence to handle problems

Modern life often places excessive pressure on our minds and bodies. For this reason we may need to slow down and rest in order to heal deepl

Knowing the importance of relaxation and knowing when to Relax are vital for ensuring your ongoing health and well being, as well as restoring the passion and joy in your life. Too much stress can cause many actual physical ailments, including a stroke or a heart attack.

Learn that no matter what situation you are in, no matter your age, there are times that each one of us faces a stressful moment. This is part of living. Whether the stress evolves out of cramming to take a test or working two jobs to pay the bills, we become stressed. The main thing is learn to stop, sit down, and relax.

As we are almost finished with the first month of the new year, it is the time to look back. It is a good occasion to take lesson from the past and to make necessary changes, to change habits in order to make the forthcoming year a lot more promising.

In today's stressful life people are forgetting to enjoy life so let us start this New Year with a resolution to enjoy life more. On contrary to the hectic and nerve racking lifestyles of millions, The vow to enjoy life more instills freshness in life

Spending a little more time with the near and dear ones and sharing those priceless moments with immense passion is definitely the very first step to enjoy life more. To take pleasure from all the trifle and insignificant things not only controls the stress but at the same time is the cornerstone of enjoying life. Work is definitely important. However, it is not the only facet of life and therefore scheduling extra time for family, vacation, interests and hobbies helps to us to relax.

Enjoying life is not just to meet with friends or just a lazy relaxation but a more intense time to say no to stress. To enjoy life more is to experience the relaxation time to feel the quiet time which at the days end aids in being more productive yet stress free.

Life will be more enjoyable when you remember to take time for REST and RELAXATON.

See you all next Sunday!

GOOD READING & COMMON SENSE LOGIC

Posted by Unknown on Friday, January 28, 2011

I was sitting at my computer trying to come up with a positive piece for Saturday after a particularly trying Friday filled with more uncertainties than certainties regarding my situation when my friend sent the following email.  It was such a timely piece of information I decided sharing it with you was way more important to anything I had to say, so please read it and consider all that you do in your life to make it a long and healthy life

AFTER YEARS OF TELLING PEOPLE CHEMOTHERAPY IS THE ONLY WAY TO TRY ('TRY', BEING THE KEY WORD) TO ELIMINATE CANCER, JOHNS HOPKINS IS FINALLY STARTING TO TELL YOU THERE IS AN ALTERNATIVE WAY ..

Cancer Update from Johns Hopkins :

1.
Every person has cancer cells in the body. These cancer cells do not show up in the standard tests until they have multiplied to a few billion. When doctors tell cancer patients that there are no more cancer cells in their bodies after treatment, it just means the tests are unable to detect the cancer cells because they have not reached the detectable size.

2. Cancer cells occur between 6 to more than 10 times in a person's lifetime.

3. When the person's immune system is strong the cancer cells will be destroyed and prevented from multiplying and forming tumors.

4. When a person has cancer it indicates the person has nutritional deficiencies. These could be due to genetic, but also to environmental, food and lifestyle factors.

5. To overcome the multiple nutritional deficiencies, changing diet to eat more adequately and healthy, 4-5 times/day and by including supplements will strengthen the immune system.

6. Chemotherapy involves poisoning the rapidly-growing cancer cells and also destroys rapidly-growing healthy cells in the bone marrow, gastrointestinal tract etc, and can cause organ damage, like liver, kidneys, heart, lungs, etc.

7. Radiation while destroying cancer cells also burns, scars and damages healthy cells, tissues and organs.

8. Initial treatment with chemotherapy and radiation will often reduce tumor size. However prolonged use of chemotherapy and radiation do not result in more tumor destruction.

9. When the body has too much toxic burden from chemotherapy and radiation the immune system is either compromised or destroyed, hence the person can succumb to various kinds of infections and complications.

10. Chemotherapy and radiation can cause cancer cells to mutate and become resistant and difficult to destroy. Surgery can also cause cancer cells to spread to other sites.

11. An effective way to battle cancer is to starve the cancer cells by not feeding it with the foods it needs to multiply.

*CANCER CELLS FEED ON:

a. Sugar substitutes like
NutraSweet, Equal, Spoonful, etc are made with Aspartame and it is harmful. A better natural substitute would be Manuka honey or molasses, but only in very small amounts. Table salt has a chemical added to make it white in color a better alternative is Bragg's aminos or sea salt.

b. Milk causes the body to produce mucus, especially in the gastro-intestinal tract. Cancer feeds on mucus. By cutting off milk and substituting with unsweetened soy milk cancer cells are being starved.

c. Cancer cells thrive in an acid environment.
A meat-based diet is acidic and it is best to eat fish, and a little other meat,  like chicken. Meat also contains livestock antibiotics, growth hormones and parasites, which are all harmful, especially to people with cancer.

d. A diet made of 80% fresh vegetables and juice, whole grains, seeds, nuts and a little fruits help put the body into an alkaline environment. About 20% can be from cooked food including beans. Fresh vegetable juices provide live enzymes that are easily absorbed and reach down to cellular levels within 15 minutes to nourish and enhance growth of healthy cells. To obtain live enzymes for building healthy cells try and drink fresh vegetable juice (most vegetables including bean sprouts) and eat some raw vegetables 2 or 3 times a day. Enzymes are destroyed at temperatures of 104 degrees F (40 degrees C)..

e. Avoid coffee, tea, and chocolate, which have high caffeine.
Green tea is a better alternative  and has cancer fighting properties. Water is best to drink, purified if possible or at least filtered. This helps to remove known toxins and heavy metals in tap water. Distilled water is acidic, avoid it.

12. Meat protein is difficult to digest and requires a lot of digestive enzymes. Undigested meat remaining in the intestines becomes putrefied and leads to more toxic buildup.

13. Cancer cell walls have a tough protein covering. By refraining from or eating less meat it frees more enzymes to attack the protein walls of cancer cells and allows the body's killer cells to destroy the cancer cells.

14. Some supplements build up the immune system (IP6, Flor-ssence, Essiac, anti-oxidants, vitamins, minerals,EFAs etc.) to enable the bodies own killer cells to destroy cancer cells..Other supplements like vitamin E are known to cause apoptosis, or programmed cell death, the body's normal method of disposing of damaged, unwanted, or unneeded cells.

15. Cancer is a disease of the mind, body, and spirit. A proactive and positive spirit will help the cancer warrior be a survivor. Anger, un-forgiveness and bitterness put the body into a stressful and acidic environment. Learn to have a loving and forgiving spirit. Learn to relax and enjoy life.

16. Cancer cells cannot thrive in an oxygenated environment. Exercising daily, and deep breathing help to get more oxygen down to the cellular level. Oxygen therapy is another means employed to destroy cancer cells.

1.
No plastic containers in micro.
2.
No water bottles in freezer.
3.
No plastic wrap in microwave..

Johns Hopkins has recently sent this out in its newsletters. This information is being circulated at Walter Reed Army Medical Center as well. Dioxin chemicals cause cancer, especially breast cancer. Dioxins are highly poisonous to the cells of our bodies. Don't freeze your plastic bottles with water in them as this releases dioxins from the plastic. Recently, Dr Edward Fujimoto, Wellness Program Manager at Castle Hospital , was on a TV program to explain this health hazard. He talked about dioxins and how bad they are for us. He said that we should not be heating our food in the microwave using plastic containers. This especially applies to foods that contain fat. He said that the combination of fat, high heat, and plastics releases dioxin into the food and ultimately into the cells of the body. Instead, he recommends using glass, such as Corning Ware, Pyrex or ceramic containers for heating food. You get the same results, only without the dioxin. So such things as TV dinners, instant ramen and soups, etc., should be removed from the container and heated in something else. Paper isn't bad but you don't know what is in the paper. It's just safer to use tempered glass, Corning Ware, etc. He reminded us that a while ago some of the fast food restaurants moved away from the foam containers to paper The dioxin problem is one of the reasons.

Also, he pointed out that plastic wrap, such as Saran, is just as dangerous when placed over foods to be cooked in the microwave. As the food is nuked, the high heat causes poisonous toxins to actually melt out of the plastic wrap and drip into the food. Cover food with a paper towel instead.

January is coming to a close, but that is no reason to give up on your New Years Resolutions even if you have done so already…

We still have eleven months to accomplish our goals…

Let’s say January was just a practice run to teach us what will work to reach our resolutions…

Now it’s time to make a step by step plan to meet your goals…

My lesson in January was learning that I have to reset my mind back to good eating habits…

It’s easy to say I’m not gonna eat but my hands and mouth have other plans…

First step in my plan: Before I eat~Stop and Ask myself am I hungry or just eating out of habit…

Step two: If I am hungry then eat, if not~Walk away from the kitchen…

Share your resolutions for the rest of the year in the comment section…

Happy Habits…

Oh where Oh where Has My Bloggy Mojo Been?

Oh where Oh where could it be?

With my time so short, and my To Do list so long,

Oh where Oh where could it be?

I have been so busy doing things for work, family, and home, I have had no time or pyschic energy to do any blogging. I miss my virtual playground and buddies, including you.

Well, that's changing today-
And I'm not going to beat myself over my slump.

We truly can be our own worst enemy, even when it comes to a hobby!

I need to remind myself how much I accomplish everyday, and that I make a meaningful positive difference, in ways great and small.

What have you been in a slump about lately?

Thank you so much, Martha @ A Sense of Humor is Essential (especially when it's updated!!)

Motivation Monday - The Realtor Game

Posted by Unknown

Want to play a game today? It's a motivational game I made up years ago called the Realtor Game - at least I think I made it up, it's possible that I may have heard it somewhere else long ago (I don't want to steal anyone's thunder ;-)

Here's how to play - first grab a pad of paper and a pen. Take a walk or drive around the block. As you come back around approaching your home stop and look at it from the outside as if you've never seen it before. Act like you are a realtor or a buyer (or even worse your boss or mother in law) coming to see your home for the very first time. Now stop and jot down your thoughts, feelings and things that could be done that would give it more curb appeal - don't think about what you can afford to do, just write down everything from the little things to the big ones.

Next, walk all the way around the outside of your house. Again jot down what you are thinking, note any repairs or maintenance that needs to be done along with any other ideas you might have.

Of course if you live in a condo, townhouse or apartment you can skip those first two steps.

Now walk up to the front doors of your home. Notice how the entrance looks and makes you feel. Is it warm and welcoming? Notice how it feels and note the first things you see when walking through the front doors - continue taking notes about anything you are thinking about along the way.

Continue the "tour" of your home taking it slowly room by room, open the closets and cabinets along the way as realtors and buyers (and mother in laws) often do. Of course continue those notes on anything you see that should be taken care of, organized, renovated, or improved upon in anyway.

When you're finished you may very well have a whole new way of looking at your home if you have really taken a good hard look at things as if you were seeing them for the first time - we often get so adjusted to seeing our surroundings that we don't notice the same details others may see.

You don't have to do anything else for the Realtor Game for this week other than keeping that list where you can see it, and review it here and there throughout this week.

We'll play part 2 of the game next week right here on Motivation Monday!

If you are playing along with us how about taking a few photos along the way? Post them on your blog along with some of your thoughts and then come back here to link up on the right sidebar at TMS Show and Tell.

Here's to a Motivated Monday!

R and R Tip #33: Recount your blessings

When you feel stressed out, burned out and maxed out, it’s natural to conclude that life is hard. Wait a minute! Take a step back and reflect. Think of all the things that you are thankful for. You have your health, your family and all those little things you normally take for granted. Take time to regain your inner strength.

Watch a sunset, listen to good music or delve into an engrossing book. Allow yourself time to reflect on the gifts you have been given. We can put things back in perspective and regain a sense of serenity.

Whenever I’ve been in a slump, I’ve discovered that it’s often because I have too much going on in my life. I’m trying to do too much. And it saps my energy and motivation. I know then that it is time to stop and count my many blessings. Taking time to reflect on the good in our lives is one way to renew our energy and refresh our strength for whatever comes into our lives each day.

Rest in your many blessings and you will be refreshed, renewed and relaxed.

See you all next Sunday!

Love, Live, Laugh and Be Happy!

The Big C and a movie that shows you both sides - THE DOCTOR with WILLIAM HURT

Posted by Unknown on Friday, January 21, 2011

Dr. Jack McKee is a doctor with it all: he's successful, he's rich, and he has no problems.... until he is diagnosed with throat cancer. Now that he has seen medicine, hospitals, and doctors from a patient's perspective, he realizes that there is more to being a doctor than surgery and prescriptions.

I found this to be a great movie back in 1991, now in 2011 I'm really glad I saw it then and am seeking it out to re-watch.  This movie gave me an idea of the type of doctor I hoped to find when I began my own search after being given a diagnosis of Ovarian Cancer.  For many of us we work our way through our lives trying to figure out the whys and why nots of everyday things.  I truly believe I was brought here to help care for my aunt so that I would be in the right place at the right time for one of the best Cancer treatment facilities in the country.

I believe I have found my "Dr. Jack McKee" and in the hospital that Dr. Jack McKee hoped to build.  In just the past week I have had tests and diagnoses that no one ever wants to go through or even hear about, but yet I have more hope now and have been treated with more kindness and dignity than ever before.

While I'm still grappling with the whys and why nots and about to go through a horribly invasive surgery with a long recuperation time and a yet unknown treatment plan, I do have hope because of my doctor and her positive outlook and I plan to explore some facts and possible ways to avoid your being in my shoes in the future in many future posts in as positive a way possible.

Frugal Fridays With Jen- Made Fresh

Belgian Endive and Pear Salad with Maple Candied Pecans: the first recipe I've tried from my new book, The Veganomicon. It's a collection of recipes that are all vegan, meaning my dairy-allergic child can safely eat anything prepared from it. This looks like cole slaw with nuts in it, but it is actually a little sweet, and made from belgian endive, thinly sliced pears, a twee bit of olive oil and balsamic vinegar, plus pecans I quickly toasted in a skillet and candied with some maple syrup. So good! Total cost was under $4, and half the ingredients were organic. Simple cheese and crackers or a glass of milk or soy milk can increase the protein amount without significantly increasing cost. A winner all around!

Hope for the Home Office

Posted by Unknown on Tuesday, January 18, 2011

Happy Wednesday at The Motivation Station, and thank you for visiting to share in my "Hope for the Home Office".
I telecommute for my nursing case management job, and I spend a lot of time in my home office. And I have the computer cables, equipment overload, bursting email inboxes, and junk mail folders to prove it. This past weekend, I just had had "ENOUGH". (Doesn't it always come to that? Where you are just done with looking at the mess, and you say, "Enough". Well, that's what happened to me.)

I finally tackled the snakepit under my desk that keep my two computers, two printers, VoIp phone, fax machine, and landlines powered up. Scary, isn't it?
This is quite improvement with at least some tangles free.
Next on my "To Do" list is cleaning up both work and personal email folders. I also plan to take my old electronics equipment to an E-Waste collection event this weekend.

How about you? Do you have plans to declutter your Virtual or Home Office?

Thank you so much, Martha @A Sense of Humor is Essential

Tuesdays With Kris: Under the Weather

Posted by Unknown

Hi everyone! I've come down with either strep or the flu. Not sure which as I am going to the doctor after I write this post. Aches, fever, sore throat and the the beginnings of a cough. I didn't know what to write today at first, but then I remembered that whenever I am sick I like to use certain natural remedies to help ease the pain until I can see a doctor.  Until I see one, I am not a fan of over the counter medicine so I like to follow these practices until I can be seen.

FEVER: Elderflower, Echinacea, Cinnamon and Thyme are great herbs to take a fever down. You can add these items to teas and soups. Sometimes the best remedy for me to ease the pains and chills of a fever is to sweat it out. Hot baths, bundling up, and even cooking that soup over a hot stove sweats it out for me. When you are sweating it out, a cold compress can help if you are just too hot!

SORE THROAT: I've never found a better remedy than spicy soup from a Thai restaurant. You know, the brothy one (Tom Yum) that comes with vegetables, noodles and shrimp? Mom's chicken soup is good too, but the add of super spicy peppers in this broth really kick it! And tea with honey and  lemon of course. Go for GREEN TEA when ill, and add extra fighting power too (like the herbs).

ACHES AND PAINS: Chamomile and Ginger tea is a great remedy for aches and pains. They have a soothing quality that really eases the typical aches we get when a flu creeps up!

CONGESTION: Sometimes when we think we are feeling better that is just when congestion rears its ugly head. believe it or not, all of that mucus is your body's way of getting rid of the toxins! So, in my mind medicines that make you stop creating the mucus are preventing you from ridding the toxins. Maybe... or that's just my conspiracy theorist mind at work! Neti pots really do the trick when battling mucus in your nose. It's scary to think about, but it really does work!

{photo here}

Other great foods to add to your meals when you are sick are: lots of garlic, ginger, onions, herbs (like thyme and sage), hot peppers, honey, lemons and fresh fruits.

Some supplements: Go for supplements like Zinc and Vitamin D when fighting off an illness. Also remember to EAT your vitamins. Zinc look to tofu, chicken, pumpkin seeds, beans, lentils and nuts. Vitamin D go for salmon, tuna, milk (but if congested try to stay away from dairy!) and if adventurous have a tablespoon of cod liver oil!

Be well everyone and always see a Dr. These are not tips to avoid the Dr, but rather helpful hints for when you can't get to one just yet.

Motivation Monday - GIT Challenge

Posted by Unknown on Monday, January 17, 2011

I have the day off today and the kids too - what better to do today than a GIT Challenge!

The idea with the GIT Challenge is to play catch up with whatever we need to get done. It can be cleaning, decluttering, organizing, paperwork, errands - whatever you need to accomplish!

Just leave a comment saying you'll play along, minimize this post so you can easily come back to it throughout the day, stop what you are doing (meaning get off the computer and stop procrastinating!), take an hour right now to catch up on things you need to do. Turn off the TV, turn on some music and work as fast as you can!

Come back every hour or so and leave a comment to tell us about your progress. Check out what other participants have accomplished - all in the comment section, no blog hopping necessary. After updating get back to work for another hour or so until you're done for the day. We always accomplish so much during these challenges!

Jump in anytime, there's no special time to start or finish. It's fun working together - join us!

Don't forget to view all the things I've been up to lately on the sidebar in our TMS Show and Tell section - busy times!

Wishing you a Motivated Monday!

You're only here for a short visit. Don't hurry, don't worry. And be sure to smell the flowers along the way
